While Onitzuka Tiger is unveiling new things in 2010 (see world’s first Tansu Trainer), they will also reach back into the past for a few select items. Onitsuka Tiger will re-introduce its Lay Up 72 model this spring after an almost 40-year hiatus.

This Chuck Taylor-like sneaker combines a unique mixture of nylon and vulcanization. it also features a white rubber toe cap, white laceholders, white shoelaces and Onitsuka branding on the tongue, ankle area and heel pad. Three colorways, including orange, blue and red, are now available at select retailers in Europe.

Recently, we have spotted the Onitsuka Tiger as the canvas for collaboration such as the Azita x Onitsuka Tiger X-Caliber and the Wood Wood x Onitsuka Tiger X-Caliber. This time around, the Onitsuka Tiger stands by itself in two new colorways.

One pair (shown to the right) features a primarily light grey leather base with the Onitsuka logo appearing in the red and black. In addition, the toe area is done up in light grey suede. The remaining pair (shown here) possesses a pink-shaded upper with the logo seen in brown and red. Both are available now at Mita. Click here to view detailed photos of the new Tiger arrivals.

One of the best running shoes at the time, Onitsuka Tiger’s X-Caliber quickly became a hit after its inception in 1982, due to the sneaker’s high comfort and excellent design. Flash forward almost three decades later and that same design is now making itself the center of attention within the brand’s upcoming collaborative releases.

Teaming up with Japanese brand Azita, the X-Caliber gets a new colorway featuring a a mainly Black/Yellow/Grey color block with hints of gradient patterns in between. The shoe will become available through Schuh-You, so stay tuned.

To truly respect the brand’s heritage and authenticity, Onitsuka Tiger submerged in the Japanese symbolism of the 60 year cycle and discovered the ancient Japanese legend of the Zodiac Race. For their 60th anniversary Onitsuka Tiger created a huge ‘Zodiac Race’ sneaker island.

This fall 2009 Onitsuka Tiger will unveil its Cycle of life Zodiac product package to the public. It features a special T-shirt and a direct translation of the ‘Zodiac Race’ sneaker island into a Mexico 66 shoe. This version of the Mexico 66 is executed in an all over photo print with a very unique finish, giving the shoe an extra 3D effect and nice suede detailing.

The special celebration box (for the shoes) and the hang tag (for the T-shirt) both feature a design of the white paper and red and white ribbon traditionally used to wrap a 60th birthday present in Japan. The pack will be launched in October 2009.
