We are not going to introduce the White/Varsity Red Air Jordan 6 as the Home colorway of Chicago Bulls. Instead there is a more interesting story about this particular colorway. Most Air Jordan 6 fans mostly enjoy for the red hair Sakuragi’s charm instead of Jordan’s first brilliant crown.
Slam Dunk, a Japanese comic written by Takehiko Inoue, which has sold over 120 million copies in Japan as of May 2007. It is a story around Sakuragi Hanamichi (桜木 花道) and basketball team from Shohoku High School. At first, Sakuragi was known for his poor basketball skills as a beginner and in his first few official matches, he fouled out every game. However, his basketball skills advanced throughout the series. After a series of tough training, he became a formidable rebounder, with his rebounding becoming his claim to fame throughout the latter half of the series to chase for the dream of making Shohoku the national champion.
In the story, Sakuragi worn Air Jordan 6 at the beginning and changed to wear Air Jordan 1 after his Air Jordan 6 was broken. He persuaded a sneakers shop owner to sell him the Air Jordan 6 Chicago Bulls colorway OG in 300 Japanese Yen (that is less than 4 US dollars… orz).
The success of Slam Dunk is cited as an influence in the increased popularity of basketball among the Japanese youth during 1990s. Until now, Slam Dunk is still the most popular basketball comic around the world. The Air Jordan 6 also becomes one of the most popular Air Jordan shoes in Japan, especially this particular “Sakuragi Hanamichi” colorway.
The shoes will be available in mens size in Hong Kong on April 19 and follow by GS, PS, TD in May. Thanks to Nike Hong Kon
